logistics : facilities

production equipment...

production equipment refers to all the equipment used on a film set
put another way, production equipment includes any equipment that is needed fro a film to be shot.

production equipment -

lighting -
  • lighting - used for creating the scene with a specific mood or atmosphere
  • light stands - to hold the lights up and in the right position
  • generator - large power outlet for any and all equipment that needs it
  • filters -
  • gels - can be used for colour exposure
  • diffusion - to soften light
  • grip stands -
  • reflectors -
  • grip accessories -
grip equiptment -

micro task:
what equipment and accessories might a grip use on a film set?
  • grip stands
  • filters
  • gels
camera package -
  • camera
  • stock or media
  • lenses - narrow or wide field of view?
  • filters
  • tripods - also known as legs and sticks (two types: fluid head tripod and hydraulic)
camera movement -
  • dolly
  • track
  • accessories - wedges, etc
  • sound equipment -
  • sound recording unit
  • headphones
  • microphones - (two types: omni directional and uni directional)
  • microphone holders
  • cables
  • boom
  • wind shields
post production equipment -

The phrase "post-production" covers the various technical phases, after production, that put the film together and make it ready for release.

these phases include:
  • picture edit
  • sound edit
  • visual effects
  • grading
  • tilting
post-production equipment -
 picture editing package:
  • AVID media composer
  • apple final cut pro
  • adobe premier
sound editing facilities:
  • stienburg nuendo
  • AVID pro tools
  • audacity
also, high end facilities for effects. e.g. grading.

facility houses:

companies that hire out a variety of equipment for film, television and video production.

micro task...
  • imagine that 10k is the portion of your budget allocated to sound and camera equipment.
  • based on the knowledge you've gained during yesterday's tasks, put together a basic equipment budget based on equipment sourced from facility houses. (5 day shoot).
5-7 days (10k) - start (only camera and sound equipment)

camera - SONY Z150 (4k) £300 per week
lenses - VEYDRA E MOUNT PRIMES SET £330 per week
lighting - ARRI 750 WAT HEAD KIT £150 per week
DEDOLIGHT OCTODOME 5' £330 per week
                BACKGROUND KIT £60 per week
CALIFORNIA SUNBOUNCE KIT £75 per week
GREEN SCREEN 9'x10' £45 per week
13 AMP CABLE DRUM £6 per week
grip - OCONNER 2575D HEAD £300 per week
slider - RONFORD BAKER 6FT £600 per week
audio - RODE BOOM POLE £24 per week

TOTAL - £2,220 for up to 7 days of use

facility houses -
facilities task evaluation:
  • how did the companies measure up? compare and contrast them.
most of the websites that I looked at, I found that they charged for a single day's use or permanent use. however, the website I used for the products listed above charged the items for 5-7 days at a time which is more practical when thinking about a short form film.
  • which aspects of the equipment research were the most time consuming?
the lighting equipment was most time consuming to find as it was difficult to pick out exactly what products we needed and which ones we didn't.

trying to find places
  • what would be the impact on the production of:
  1. allocating insufficient time to equipment research in the overall production timescale?
if too much time is taken up sorting out equipment then you run the risk of falling behind schedule for the whole production.
  1. beginning equipment research too late?
this could lead to not being able to get the right equipment on time which could make the result a lower quality. it also means that the products that you do manage to get could be problematic.
  1. not researching a sufficient number of companies?
as much as researching other companies is time consuming, you can find the cheapest or most efficient equipment for your shoot. without looking at more websites, you could waste a lot of the productions money.

prop houses -
  • as the title suggests, these are companies that hire out a variety of props for video production (sometimes for theatre and film interchangeably).
micro task:
  • imagine you are shooting a drama about knife crime in 80s Glasgow.
  • make a list of props you will need to source for the production.
  • knife
  • fake blood
  • cars
  • old buildings
sourcing -
  • refers to the work you have just undertaken.
  • during the pre-production phases of a film project, a variety of essential items needs to be sourced from camera related facilities to props and vehicles.
costs of facilities -
  • in an earlier task you had 10K allocated to camera and sound equipment requirements .
  • now imagine that you had a short film budget of 10K (the size of a standard film grant). this sum will need to cover all your expenditure.
miro task:
  • read through the various costing areas and then estimate how much of your 10K budget you will allocate to equipment and facilities.
  • staying within your budget allocation, source and cost recording equipment, props, post-production hire etc.
